Exhibition “Black & White”

Who is black and who is white? Who actually determines this? And what does the Dutch slavery in the past have to do with this? 150 years after the abolition of slavery, the Tropenmuseum will be confronting visitors with this and other questions in the exhibition Black & White.
Personal stories, photos, videos, contemporary art and historical documents present a picture of the way in which black and white live together and view each other in the Netherlands.

1 November 2013 until 1 July 2014 in the Great Hall

Celebrate freedom: a monument of 11,000 names
Following the abolition of slavery, freed slaves received surnames. The more than 11,000 names that the freed slaves were given at the time can be found on a special monument in the exhibition.

Contemporary Art Space opened at The Vietnamese Women’s Museum

A new contemporary art space was inaugurated at Vietnamese Women’s Museum (VWM) on July 17, 2013. It is the result of the cooperation between VWM and Menifique Art Museum to enrich VWM exhibits and better meet visitors’ needs. This is the first activity by Menfique Art Museum in a long-term project to link Vietnamese contemporary arts and international arts. On this occasion, an individual exhibition entitled “Windows” was opened at the Centre by Painter Duong Thuy Lieu, one of the four painters whose works will be introduced in 2013 and 2014. "Windows" and handles in Duong Thuy Lieu’s paintings not only show the inner feelings and surrounding world through her eyes but also is evidence of how arts have changed the life of each of us and how we have changed the arts.
